What we take care of

A legal name change in India rests on three records: a sworn affidavit, a public notice in two newspapers and a notification in the Gazette of India. We prepare and file all three.

Affidavit

Drafted on stamp paper with your old name, new name and reason, then notarised in your city.

Newspaper notice

Published in one English and one regional language newspaper in your area.

Gazette filing

Application to the Department of Publication with follow up until your name appears.

ID updates

Clear guidance for Aadhaar, PAN, passport, bank and education records.

Types of name change we handle

Every case follows the same legal route. What changes is the supporting proof you need.

Name change typeCommon reasonKey supporting documentTypical time

Surname change after marriageTaking or adding spouse's surnameMarriage certificate2 to 4 weeks

The name change process, step by step

No court visit is needed for a standard adult name change. Here is what happens and roughly how long each stage takes.

  1. Affidavit

We draft your affidavit on stamp paper. You sign it before a notary in your own city.

    1 to 2 days
  2. Newspaper notice

Your change of name notice is published in one English and one regional language newspaper.

    2 to 5 days
  3. Gazette application

We file the deed, affidavit, newspaper cuttings and ID proof with the Department of Publication.

    1 to 3 days
  4. Gazette published

Your notification appears in the Gazette of India, Part IV. You receive the copy to update your documents.

    Usually 2 to 3 weeks

Keep these ready and the process moves without delays. Your case may need one or two extras listed on the right.

After the Gazette: update your documents in this order

Aadhaar comes first because most other offices accept it as proof of the new name.

DocumentWhere to updateWhat to carry
AadhaarAadhaar Seva Kendra or enrolment centreGazette copy and current Aadhaar
PANProtean or UTIITSL online portalGazette copy and updated Aadhaar
Bank accountsYour home branchGazette copy and KYC documents
PassportPassport Seva portal and your nearest Passport Seva KendraGazette copy, newspaper cuttings, old passport
Driving licence and voter IDTransport Department and Voters' portalGazette copy and address proof
Education and property recordsYour board, university or sub registrarGazette copy and original certificates

Mistakes that send people back to step one

Most rejected applications fail on small details. These are the ones we check twice.

One rule saves the most time: your new name must be spelled the same way in the affidavit, both newspapers and the Gazette application.
Spelling differs across papers
Even one letter of difference can lead to rejection. We match every record before filing.
Only one newspaper notice
The Gazette needs the notice in one English and one regional language newspaper. Keep the original cuttings.
Missing witness or signature
The deed needs two witnesses. An unsigned page is one of the most common reasons for return.
Updating documents out of order
Start with Aadhaar, then PAN. Other offices often ask for one of these in the new name.

Frequently asked questions

Still unsure about your case? Call +91 92119 55989 and ask us directly.

How long does a Gazette name change take?
Most cases take around two to four weeks from affidavit to publication. The final publication date is set by the government, so it can take longer in busy periods.
I do not live in Delhi. Can you still help me?
Yes. We handle name changes for clients across India. You sign the affidavit before a notary in your own city and courier or upload the documents. We take care of the newspaper notice and the Gazette of India filing.
Do I need to go to court to change my name?
No. A standard adult name change through affidavit, newspaper publication and Gazette notification does not need a court appearance. Some special cases, such as certain minor name changes with a single guardian, may need a court order.
Is a Central Gazette name change valid across India?
Yes. A notification in the Gazette of India is accepted across the country for updating Aadhaar, PAN, passport, bank records and other documents.
Can I change my surname after marriage without a Gazette?
Some offices accept a marriage certificate for a surname change. A Gazette notification removes doubt and is often asked for by passport, bank and education authorities, so many people choose it.
Can NRIs change their name through the Gazette?
Yes. The affidavit can be attested abroad at an Indian Embassy or Consulate, and the rest of the process can be handled in India on your behalf.
What does your fee include?
Affidavit drafting, newspaper publication in two papers, Gazette application and follow up, and guidance for updating your documents. Call +91 92119 55989 for a quote for your case.
Can I correct only the spelling of my name?
Yes. A spelling correction follows the same affidavit, newspaper and Gazette route and is one of the most common requests.
